leblonВ нашем университетском книжном магазине уже много лет лежит книга с загадочным названием "The structure of spherical buildings". В отделе математики. Вот из-за таких людей, как автор этой книги, думал я, у математиков плохая репутация. Сегодня заглянул на amazon.com и прочел следующую рецензию:
This is the best currently available introduction to the theory of buildings. And it brings the reader to a very important theorem in the theory of spherical buildings. Moreover, it is very carefully written: obviously the author spent quite some time arranging the different results in the right order, which isn't a straightforward task. As for explaining the really hard part of the classification of spherical buildings, this book is a perfect complement to the existing literature.
Хорошо! Живо напомнило одну историю из "Кибериады" Лема, про драконов:
"Тут-то гениальный Цереброн, атаковав проблему методами
точных наук, установил, что имеется три типа драконов: нулевые, мнимые и
отрицательные. Все они, как было сказано, не существуют, однако каждый тип
- на свой особый манер. Мнимые и нулевые драконы, называемые на
профессиональном языке мнимоконами и нульконами, не существуют значительно
менее интересным способом, чем отрицательные."
А вспомнил я про это потому, что вчера в библиотеке заметил новое поступление под заглавием "Complete Course in Astrobiology." 434 страницы, между прочим.

Have you ever started to read a book, only to finally look up from it and realize that you have missed two meals? This is what happened to me when I opened up Weiss's book. It is a masterwork, so drenched in intellectual heft that I swear I saw some dripping off the paper. Humanity has rarely produced a more gripping 160 pages, and I only wish there were more. His next instant classic cannot come too soon.
I knew it would happen- but never expected to read such a clear and concise proof. Weiss does not skimp on the reasoning. A thorough and excellent approach to this topic.
What a read! This is a must-read for any fans of spherical buildings out there, or also just for people interested in Richard Weiss's previous books. This guy sure can write! I couldn't put it down.
Настолько потрясающие, что в голову лезет дурная мыслишка, будто автор комментариев и книги один и тот же.
