I think these people just want to increase the number of their citations. They have an agreement that if anyone has a good idea, everyone else becomes a co-author of the paper.

Also, as far as I remember, Watson never called Holmes by his first name, nor Holmes ever said "my dear John" to Watson. First-name calling was a privilege reserved only for family members. Only one person, - Mycroft Holmes, - ever said "Sherlock". As for Watson, we don't usually remember his first name, for the same reason.
