A. O. Beckman (1900-2004) was an American chemist, inventor, businessman, and philanthropist. A major portion of his scientifica career was spent at Caltech. He invented the pH-meter (1935), funded the first transistor company in Mountain View, CA (the Shockley Semiconductor Lab) and thus started the Silicon Valley. Numerous buildings at Caltech and elsewhere are named after him.
