Caltech has an interesting program: they interview their famous faculty members, resulting in a long autobiography. Here is an interview with Gell-Mann.  Very interesting details about his life and times. For example, it turns out he chose Caltech over Berkeley because in the early 1950s  Berkeley started demanding loyalty oaths from all employees, including faculty, and fired 31 tenured professors who refused to do it. This was at the height of McCarthyism. Gell-Mann regarded such loyalty oaths as "fascism" and went to Caltech instead.
